On November 5, 2024, a meeting was held at the Polytechnic University of Turin, where Professor Dr. Piergiorgio Valente shared his vision of how the metaverse is influencing the economy and its fiscal implications.

Abstract

The planetary expansion of the economic sphere decontextualizes the relationship with the normative order emanating from the state, rendering it contingent, unstable, and ever-changing. The distance between spaces contracts and collapses until it vanishes; time becomes fleeting and intangible, anorexic in the electronic instant. Technology eliminates topographical coordinates, inaugurating a geography without borders, a relational and omnipresent map.

The global economic horizon encroaches on the nation-state, with the market devouring its territory and appropriating portions of sovereignty, thereby contributing to the establishment of a new criterion of subordination: the market, once subordinate to the state, now takes precedence over the state itself. As a result of this reversal of subordination, a profound rift is created between the national space of law and the transnational space of the economy.
