Rediscovering Humanitas: Between Past and Future
In the face of the swirling expectations of modernity, the urgency to rediscover values that anchor human identity becomes increasingly pressing. In a rapidly changing world, it is necessary to recover a renewed sense of self, one that is aware of its own specificities and its place in the universe. The question arises: how aware are we of the fracture between bios and techne in modernity? And, more importantly, is there a remedy to bridge a gap that seems to widen with each passing day?
Humanitas, as the link between present and past, stands as the key to this reflection. Humanity rediscovers its roots, and from those same roots, it is reborn in an today that is a reworking of the past. A past that, unfortunately, is marked by both its achievements and its mistakes, but remains essential for understanding and confronting the challenges of the future.
Recharging Humanitas means not allowing ourselves to be disheartened by the decline of a certain societal model but being aware that a new dawn will soon arise. It is the mainstream of the Ancients that offers the sharpest contrast to the poverty of modern thought, helping us keep alive the capacity to think and reflect beyond the limits imposed by contemporary society.
In this intertwining of past and future, technology emerges as a “daughter” of Humanitas, a rational specificity rooted in human intellect. It is this technology, if adequately understood and used, that becomes the foundation for further development of Humanitas itself. Thus, it is not a contradiction but an evolution, an opportunity to expand and strengthen human intelligence, firmly anchoring it to its origins in order to face the future with greater awareness.
